1. Introductions
Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke held their first meeting with Team 7’s leader, Kakashi Hatake. After they each introduced themselves, Kakashi explained that he wouldn’t simply accept them as a team right away. First, he needed to test their true potential as Genin through an exam scheduled for the following day.
Kakashi ordered Team 7 to arrive at the training grounds at five in the morning. He strictly forbade them from eating breakfast, warning that they would throw up during the trial. The next day, the trio arrived right on time, exhausted and half-asleep. However, Kakashi didn’t show up until ten o’clock, leaving them deeply annoyed by his extreme tardiness.
2. The Mission
As the exam began, Kakashi assigned Team 7 their mission: steal two bells from him before noon. Anyone who failed would be denied lunch. It was then that Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura finally realized the real reason Kakashi had forbidden breakfast—he wanted them to face the Genin exam on an empty stomach.
Confused, Sakura asked why there were only two bells. Kakashi explained that this was intentional; if Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke failed to secure a bell, at least one of them—or possibly all three—would be stripped of their Genin status and sent straight back to the Academy.
Kakashi also gave them permission to fight seriously, urging them to come at him with the full intent to kill if they wanted to succeed.
3. Naruto vs. Kakashi
The exam commenced. Naruto instantly challenged Kakashi to a taijutsu bout, but the Jonin effortlessly dodged every strike. Ultimately, Kakashi unleashed his Sennen Goroshi technique, launching Naruto high into the air before he crashed into the river below.
Moments later, seven of Naruto’s Kage Bunshin (Shadow Clones) burst from the water, charging straight at Kakashi. As Kakashi braced for the assault, an additional clone suddenly ambushed him from behind.
Six of the clones restrained Kakashi from the front, while another leaped into the air, ready to punch the seemingly defenseless instructor. However, Kakashi vanished in a flash, causing Naruto to punch his own clone instead.
4. Naruto Trapped
Naruto and his eight clones quickly began accusing one another, entirely convinced that Kakashi had disguised himself as one of them. The argument devolved into pure chaos as the clones started beating each other up. Consequently, Naruto ended up battered and bruised, suffering the backlash of his own jutsu.
A moment later, Naruto’s mood brightened when he spotted a bell lying near a tree. He assumed Kakashi had been careless and dropped it while hastily escaping the clone ambush.
But the second Naruto reached for the bell, a rope suddenly snared his ankles, hoisting him upside down from the tree. Kakashi stepped out of hiding and mocked him, calling him a fool for falling for such an obvious trap.
