1. Ibiki Explains the Test
Ibiki explained to the candidates that the written exam consisted of ten questions. Each correct answer was worth one point, and every participant had to score at least seven points to pass.
He also heavily emphasized that passing was a team effort: if a single member scored a zero, their entire team would fail. Hearing this rule, Naruto instantly felt the crushing pressure of Sakura and Sasuke’s glaring expectations.
The candidates began working on the first nine questions. Naruto scanned his exam paper, desperately searching for an easy question, only to quickly realize that all nine were impossibly difficult to answer.
2. The Exam’s True Purpose
Sasuke realized the exact same thing—every question on the page seemed impossible to understand. He then recalled Ibiki’s earlier warning: anyone caught cheating in a pathetic manner would only be destroying themselves.
From this, Sasuke deduced the true purpose of the exam. It was a test of information gathering, requiring the candidates to covertly use their jutsu to cheat without being detected by the proctors.
The participants who figured out the test’s true nature immediately began cheating using their respective jutsu. Kiba relied on Akamaru, perched on top of his head, to read the answers of those sitting nearby.
Dosu utilized his hyper-sensitive hearing to decipher the scratching of the pens from the candidates behind him. Meanwhile, Shino deployed a tracking insect to fly around and copy other participants’ answers. The bug then relayed the information back to him through specific flight patterns that only he could decipher.
3. Naruto Refuses to Cheat
Sitting next to Naruto, Hinata softly offered to let him copy her exam. Just as Naruto prepared to glance at her paper, a kunai suddenly shot straight past his face.
The blade embedded itself firmly in the desk of Udin, the candidate sitting directly behind him. Kotetsu announced that Udin was disqualified for being caught cheating five times in a row, meaning his two teammates were automatically expelled as well.
Naruto panicked as he watched numerous candidates get disqualified for getting caught. Hinata grew increasingly anxious upon seeing Naruto’s blank answer sheet and urged him once more to copy her work.
However, acutely aware that Izumo was watching him, Naruto quietly told Hinata that a great ninja like himself would never cheat. Internally, though, he instantly regretted acting so tough.
4. Jutsu for Cheating
Elsewhere in the room, Neji utilized his Byakugan to see straight through the bodies of the other participants and read their answer sheets. Sasuke activated his Sharingan to track and mimic the hand movements of writing candidates, allowing him to perfectly replicate their answers.
Ino cast her Mind Transfer Jutsu, projecting her consciousness into Sakura to temporarily take over her body and memorize all the answers she had already written down.
Across the room, Gaara generated a speck of sand from one of his eyes and floated it toward a candidate named Hamdan. The sand drifted into Hamdan’s eye, irritating his vision.
In a flash, another cluster of sand morphed into an exact replica of Gaara’s eye, granting him a clear view of Hamdan’s paper. Having secured the answers, Gaara calmly filled out his own exam sheet.
