1. Momo’s Luck
Water continuously flowed from the snake-head fountain into the hot spring pool, until the stone head suddenly snapped off. It plummeted straight down, violently striking Juichi in the head just as he was trying to drown Momo. Capitalizing on the chaos, Momo forcefully shoved him away, broke the surface, and gasped for air.
The four other elderly men scrambled to catch Momo as she desperately climbed the rocky face to escape the pool. But out of nowhere, the wooden fence collapsed, pinning them underneath. Juichi managed to grab one of Momo’s ankles just as she was about to pull herself up—only for the wooden structure of the changing room to suddenly cave in on him. Miraculously, Momo was spared; the only part of the debris that fell on her was an already open door.
As the dust settled, Momo stared in absolute awe. With the fences completely destroyed, the hot spring now offered an unobstructed, breathtaking view of the mountainous landscape, perfectly framed by a sprawling rainbow in the sky.
Momo jumped when she noticed the Turbo Granny casually soaking in the pool. She demanded to know how the spirit had gotten there. The Turbo Granny admitted she had been eavesdropping on Seiko and Momo’s conversation. Once she heard that Jiji’s hometown had hot springs, she decided to tag along uninvited by hiding inside Momo’s bag.
Later, while Momo was secretly getting dressed, a squad of security personnel stormed the onsen and discovered the five elderly men. They immediately accused the Kito family of causing the riot and destroying the property. Panicking, the Kito family scattered, frantically fleeing from the authorities.
2. The Kito Family Visits
Just as Okarun and Jiji were reeling from the discovery of the bizarre, talisman-filled room, Jiji heard the doorbell ring. Thinking it was Momo returning, he hurried to answer it—only to be greeted by five elderly women from the Kito family.
Jiji politely served the five women snacks and drinks in the living room. He quietly whispered to Okarun that the house was a rental, and the Kito family had graciously waived the rent while his parents were hospitalized.
One of the elderly women, Naki, sharply asked if Jiji had sneaked out to hire another exorcist. Jiji casually replied that he had only gone out to pick up his friend, Okarun, who wanted to hang out. The other four women immediately began berating Jiji, insisting there were no ghosts in the house and that his actions were spreading nasty rumors that would tank the Kito family’s land value.
With a chillingly casual tone, Naki gripped her hunting rifle and informed Jiji that she had a valid hunting license. She then mused aloud about how “unexpected accidents” happen in the mountains all the time—like someone accidentally getting shot during a boar hunt.
Catching the thinly veiled death threat, Jiji tried to de-escalate the situation. He calmly warned her that pointing a rifle at him, even with a hunting license, could still get her arrested.
3. The Kito Family is Furious
Suddenly, a police officer named Tsuru walked into the house, immediately spotting Naki pointing a rifle at Jiji in the living room. Moments later, the five elderly men from the Kito family also barged in.
Juichi complained to the elderly women that they had just been chased by security forces, accused of destroying the hot spring. He added that if Tsuru hadn’t intervened to smooth things over, they would have been in serious trouble.
Juichi then threw an arm around Jiji’s shoulder, pointing at Okarun and asking who he was. Jiji reiterated that Okarun was just a good friend visiting. Juichi decided to test Okarun, asking him what Jiji’s favorite soccer club was. Okarun froze, completely clueless, and the tension in the room spiked. Jiji subtly signaled toward the wall—specifically at a hole covered by a poster of Messi in a PSG jersey. Catching the hint, Okarun blurted out, “PSG.” Satisfied, Juichi instantly dropped his suspicion and acted friendly.
But the atmosphere soured again when Naki suddenly asked about Jiji’s female friend, demanding to know when she was coming back. Jiji feigned confusion, claiming he hadn’t brought any girls with him. Unbeknownst to him, the Kito family had been watching them ever since he arrived with Okarun and Momo. Juichi angrily accused him of lying, and Naki’s face contorted into a terrifying glare as she harshly berated Jiji for daring to deceive them.
4. The Tsuchinoko Shrine
While walking through the town, Momo carried the Turbo Granny in her bag and thanked the spirit for saving her at the hot spring. However, the Turbo Granny admitted she hadn’t actively done anything. She explained that the latent power of her vessel—the luck-bringing cat figure—had simply acted on its own.
Momo then mentioned that she hadn’t sensed any ghostly presence at Jiji’s house. The Turbo Granny grimly replied that the house was in a state of critical emergency, having absorbed far too much human blood.
When Momo visited the Tsuchinoko Shrine, she was startled to find the shrine keeper, Manjiro, striking a bizarre pose: balancing on his hands with his legs straight up in the air, essentially doing a headstand. Noticing a visitor, Manjiro quickly apologized. He explained he was recording the stunt for content because he wanted to become a YouTuber, before welcoming her inside.
However, Momo was deeply disappointed when she saw the historical artifact displayed in a glass case—allegedly the molted skin of a Tsuchinoko. To her, it looked exactly like an umbilical cord, nothing like the mythical creature she had imagined.
Manjiro explained the shrine’s ancient lore. According to surviving texts, a dragon soaring into the sky would cast a rainbow, but if the mountain’s wrath was awakened, the village would be swallowed whole.
The legend dictated that if the giant snake residing within the volcano grew hungry, the mountain would erupt. In the past, villagers would sacrifice young children to feed the snake and appease the mountain. Thanks to this brutal tradition, the volcano hadn’t erupted in 200 years, and the region was blessed with abundant hot springs.
Manjiro added that they now worshipped the molted skin of the Tsuchinoko in an effort to prevent another eruption. However, he firmly stated that the legend of the giant snake was a tragic misconception. Fear had driven the villagers to madness, making them believe human sacrifice was necessary. Manjiro believed his true duty as a shrine keeper was to retell this dark history so that such horrific mistakes would never be repeated.
5. Momo vs. Naki
When Momo returned and stepped into the living room of Jiji’s house, she was horrified to see Jiji and Okarun lying unconscious on the floor. Ten members of the Kito family were gathered there, including the five elderly men who had attacked her at the hot spring. Naki sneered, “Finally, our sacrifices are complete. Let the festival begin.”
Naki suddenly lunged forward, launching a flying kick at Momo, but the girl managed to block it with both arms. Momo quickly backed away, desperately dodging a relentless barrage of attacks. Using her aura hands, she pulled various kitchen appliances and hurled them at Naki. Astonishingly, Naki effortlessly swatted them all away with incredible precision.
In a finishing move she called the “Jennifer Lopez Anaconda,” Naki unleashed a devastating double punch aimed squarely at Momo’s stomach. Although Momo tried to block by crossing her arms, the sheer force sent her flying backward, crashing straight through the wall and tumbling into the hidden room plastered with thousands of talismans.
Juichi pointed out to Naki that Momo possessed strange powers—she could make objects levitate and carried a talking cat doll. Naki conceded that Momo had unusual abilities, but firmly stated that she clearly wasn’t a real exorcist.
6. The Kito Family Ritual
Naki revealed that the Kito family had protected this land for centuries, and they absolutely would not let Momo ruin their sacred familial tradition.
She aggressively pointed out that Momo was only able to enjoy the hot springs because of the Kito family’s sacrifices. For 200 years, they had been offering human sacrifices to the giant snake to prevent the volcano from erupting.
In return, the snake blessed the village with its abundant hot springs. Naki declared that without their protection, the village would have been swallowed by magma long ago.
Naki then dropped a chilling truth: the very ground Jiji’s house was built on had always been the sacrificial altar. While the house’s architecture had changed with the times, its dark purpose remained exactly the same. The Kito family’s duty was to lure sacrifices into the house and offer them to the snake god. Naki gloated about her incredible luck in securing three sacrifices at once: Momo, Okarun, and Jiji.
7. Falling into the Altar Room
Suddenly, the floor of the talisman room beneath Momo turned into quicksand, violently sucking her legs downward. Naki announced that the giant snake was hungry. Standing safely on the other side of the breached wall, Naki and the five elderly men watched as Momo and the Turbo Granny panicked, struggling against the sinking floor. Naki coldly explained that anyone swallowed by the sand automatically became a meal for the giant snake.
Okarun and Jiji suddenly regained consciousness. Working together, they shoved a heavy sofa directly onto Naki and the five elderly men, pinning them down so they couldn’t move. Okarun reached his hand out, and Momo desperately grabbed it. He pulled with all his might to keep her from sinking, while Jiji furiously fought off the four elderly women trying to free the rest of their family from under the sofa.
But the structural integrity of the room gave way, and the walls suddenly collapsed. The violent shift in balance dragged everyone—the entire Kito family, Jiji, Okarun, and Momo—straight down into the quicksand.
They plummeted into a massive underground cavern, landing on the roof of a buried house. The cavern was impossibly large, littered with several entire houses from different eras that had been swallowed over the centuries. Looking up, Momo realized they had fallen incredibly far from the talisman room.
8. The Tsuchinoko Snake
However, Jiji had been thrown off course and landed squarely on the back of the Tsuchinoko snake. Momo and Okarun stared in sheer terror at the colossal creature. The entire Kito family immediately stood up and struck bizarre, eccentric poses, supposedly to “welcome” the snake and avoid being eaten.
Using her aura hands, Momo grabbed Jiji and pulled him to safety, reuniting the three of them on the roof of the buried house.
Momo and Jiji were stunned to realize that the giant snake wasn’t just a local myth; it was terrifyingly real. The Turbo Granny called it a Kuragari, but Okarun pointed out it looked exactly like the Mongolian Death Worm featured on the cover of the UMA book they had read on the train.
Okarun was baffled—the book claimed Death Worms only grew up to two meters long, but the monstrosity before them was impossibly colossal.
Momo grimly put the pieces together: for 200 years, the Kito family hadn’t been sacrificing humans to a snake god at all. They had simply been feeding a gigantic, man-eating worm.
9. The Tsuchinoko Attacks the Kito Family
Naki ordered the Tsuchinoko to devour the three sacrifices she had prepared: Momo, Okarun, and Jiji. On the roof, the Kito family began their ritual, chanting incantations. Naki stood in the center, holding her eccentric pose, while the other nine family members walked in a circle around her.
But without warning, the Tsuchinoko struck, devouring the entire Kito family in one swift, brutal motion. Momo, Okarun, and Jiji stood frozen in shock, confirming that the entire family had been wiped out in a single bite. Realizing the danger was escalating rapidly, the trio sprinted inside one of the buried houses to take cover.
10. The Sound Wave
Moments later, the Tsuchinoko emitted a bizarre, psychic sound wave. The noise instantly brought Momo and Okarun to their knees in sheer agony, both clamping their hands over their ears. Jiji watched them in total confusion, completely unaffected by the sound.
The psychic frequency was so overwhelming that it forcefully triggered Okarun’s yokai transformation, stripping away his self-control. Now in his terrifying, mutated state, Okarun suddenly crouched low, preparing to violently pounce on the defenseless Jiji sitting right in front of him.
