1. Mashimo Agrees to Help Hana
Mashimo visits the Sakamoto store to shop, carrying Piisuke on his shoulder. He intends to spend a 500-yen coin he just scavenged from a vending machine.
However, he is surprised to find Hana sitting at the checkout counter, looking gloomy. She is upset because she couldn’t share her “bring your parents to school” experience with Shin, Sakamoto, and Shaotang, who had suddenly vanished.
Mashimo reassures Hana, promising to help find them. Hearing this, she stops crying and calms down. Hoisting Hana onto his shoulders, Mashimo steps outside the store and sends Piisuke flying to track their whereabouts. Together, they wait for the bird’s return.
2. Asakura
In the laboratory, Horiguchi recognizes Sakamoto as the legendary assassin but underestimates his current, heavier physique, believing he can defeat him easily.
When Sakamoto attempts to punch Horiguchi, his fist strikes Shin instead. Sakamoto is confused until Horiguchi explains that the needle he injected into Sakamoto’s neck implanted a magnet. This magnet disrupts the electrical signals in Sakamoto’s brain, causing him to mix up friend and foe.
Meanwhile, inside the prison cells, Asakura introduces himself as the laboratory director to Shaotang and Tanaka. Shaotang immediately grabs Asakura by the collar and curses at him, assuming he is the mastermind behind her kidnapping. However, she lets go once Asakura explains that he is also locked up. He reveals he was imprisoned for refusing to follow Kashima’s orders.
Realizing her mistake, Shaotang pivots to grab Tanaka’s collar, shaking him and blaming him for mistaking her for Shin and kidnapping her in the first place.
Curious, Asakura asks, “The Shin with the esper abilities?”
“You know him?” Shaotang shoots back.
Asakura nods. “More than just know him. I’m the one who gave him those powers.”
Shaotang finally realizes that Shin’s abilities are not congenital.
3. Shin’s Past
It all began when an old friend, Ando, left a young Shin in Asakura’s care before disappearing, never to return.
One night, a curious Shin asked what Asakura was working on at his computer. Asakura explained that he was researching the developmental limits of brain activity—essentially, the key to psychic powers. Bursting with enthusiasm, he expressed his conviction that if the research succeeded, it would unlock limitless potential for humanity and bring happiness to everyone in the world. Shin was deeply impressed.
Later, in the lab, two scientists gossiped about Asakura as he walked past looking disheveled. They expressed pity for his research, convinced it was doomed to fail. Overhearing them, Shin reprimanded the scientists, demanding they stop casually calling Asakura’s work a failure.
Shin firmly stated that Asakura was working hard to make everyone in the world happy. Hearing this, Asakura froze, deeply moved that the boy had remembered and believed his words.
That night, Asakura used a microscope to observe particles within an experimental fluid in an Erlenmeyer flask. Thrilled by the results, he eagerly pulled out his previous research notes. With absolute certainty, he concluded that his experiment was a success.
Meanwhile, Shin woke up thirsty and wandered into Asakura’s workspace. Accidentally, he drank the fluid from the flask. Asakura caught him and frantically asked if he was alright.
The next day, while giving Shin a bath, Asakura noted internally that there were no changes in the boy. He resigned himself to another failed experiment, though he was just relieved Shin was unharmed. Suddenly, Shin spoke up, telling Asakura that he actually wasn’t fine. Asakura was stunned—Shin had just read his mind.
From then on, Shin startled all the scientists in the laboratory. He openly blurted out everyone’s internal thoughts, embarrassing many of them. As a result, they began to distance themselves, refusing to play with him anymore. Confused by their sudden shift in attitude, Shin read their minds and discovered they found his powers bothersome and terrifying. The realization crushed him.
Seeing what Shin was going through, Asakura quickly prepared an experimental serum in a test tube to cure the boy and return him to normal. But Shin refused. He asked if Asakura wasn’t happy that his research had finally succeeded.
Gripping Shin’s shoulders, Asakura apologized internally for dragging the boy into his foolish research. But Shin rejected the sentiment, declaring aloud that the research wasn’t foolish. With an angry expression, he walked out of the laboratory and never returned.
4. Shaotang Challenges Asakura to Prove His Words
Shaotang and Tanaka shed tears, deeply moved by Asakura’s story of Shin’s past. As someone who worked with Shin every day, Shaotang assured Asakura that Shin actually didn’t mind his esper abilities at all. In fact, he loved them. Shaotang even admitted to being jealous that Shin could read the famously quiet Sakamoto’s mind.
Shaotang then suggested they apologize to Shin together, as she was currently in a fight with him as well. However, she wanted to honor Sakamoto Family Rule #11: never stay mad for too long—make up quickly. Hearing this, Asakura was taken aback, realizing how foolish he had been for not making peace with Shin sooner.
Acting quickly, Asakura poured the experimental fluid from his test tube onto the iron bars, melting them down so they could open the cell door. Amazed, Shaotang asked why he hadn’t escaped earlier. Asakura admitted he preferred staying locked up over helping with Kashima’s research.
Suddenly, a hazmat-suited guard arrived to inspect the cell and caught Tanaka and Asakura opening the door. Before the guard could react, Shaotang—already hanging above the doorway—delivered a vicious kick, knocking him out instantly.
Shaotang then challenged Asakura to prove his claim that Shin viewed his esper powers as a gift. Asakura was struck by her unwavering confidence.
5. Sakamoto Defeats Horiguchi
Horiguchi revealed that he could control the chips in Shin and Shaotang’s necks via a switch in his hand, toggling them on or off at will. Through this, Horiguchi manipulated both Sakamoto and Shin: Sakamoto’s punch aimed at Horiguchi was redirected to strike Shin, and Shin’s retaliatory kick meant for Horiguchi hit Sakamoto instead.
Horiguchi then injected a needle into his own arm, causing his muscles to bulge massively. He threw a punch that sent Shin flying. When Sakamoto tried to attack from behind, Horiguchi quickly flipped the switch, halting Sakamoto’s reflexes as his brain registered Horiguchi as an ally. Exploiting the opening, Horiguchi punched Sakamoto, sending him crashing back.
Arrogantly, Horiguchi boasted about the superiority of his science, claiming it could overcome even a legendary assassin like Sakamoto. However, Shin retorted that Horiguchi’s science was no problem as long as he could still read his mind.
Unwilling to leave an opening, Horiguchi moved with blinding speed, injecting multiple needles into Shin’s body while mocking him—telepathy meant nothing if the body couldn’t keep up. Shin collapsed to the floor.
Horiguchi scoffed, wondering why his boss wanted Shin’s esper abilities so badly, deeming them worthless. Hearing this, Shin thought of Asakura and seethed with anger. Sakamoto grabbed Shin by the collar with one hand and hauled him to his feet. Firmly, he challenged Horiguchi, declaring he would prove that Shin’s esper powers were indeed useful.
Horiguchi injected more fluid into his body, mutating his muscles so drastically that he resembled the Hulk. Meanwhile, Shin stood with his back to Horiguchi, facing Sakamoto. The showdown commenced, with Shin positioned directly between them.
Horiguchi was bewildered. Why wasn’t Shin taking the brunt of Sakamoto’s relentless barrage of punches and kicks? Instead, every single strike landed accurately on Horiguchi, even though he was standing behind Shin.
Finally, Horiguchi realized the trick. Sakamoto was transmitting his attack trajectories into Shin’s mind, allowing the boy to dodge perfectly at the very last second. As a result, Sakamoto’s attacks bypassed Shin entirely and battered Horiguchi without mercy. Through this seamless strategy, Sakamoto successfully brought Horiguchi down.
6. Sakamoto Tells Shin About the Order’s Prowess
Following the fight, the scientists removed the chips from Sakamoto and Shin’s necks. They thanked Shin and apologized for alienating him in the past, acknowledging they had broken his heart and driven him away.
Shin admitted that he held no grudges. He actually liked his fate as an esper, which had paved the way for his career as an assassin. And now, he was retired, putting his new skills to use as an expert cashier at Sakamoto’s store. Relieved, Ishikawa thanked Sakamoto for taking such good care of Shin.
Wasting no time, Sakamoto and Shin sprinted toward Shaotang’s cell to free her. Along the way, Shin praised Sakamoto’s combat skills, noting how he always found a blind spot to exploit to defeat his opponents, no matter who they were.
However, Sakamoto warned Shin not to underestimate former Order members like himself. Curious, Shin asked just how strong the Order truly was. Sakamoto explained that while power levels varied, a single Order member could slaughter ten people like Shin in just six seconds. Stunned, Shin realized that meant he himself could be killed in less than a second.
Shin doubted that Nagumo, despite still being active in the Order, was actually that formidable. Sakamoto simply advised Shin to play dead if he ever crossed paths with an Order member.
Distracted by their conversation as they ran, Sakamoto accidentally stepped on a floor button. The ground instantly gave way beneath him, sending him tumbling down a shaft and separating him from Shin.
7. Osaragi and Shishiba Meet Kashima
After massacring dozens of hazmat-suited soldiers, Osaragi and Shishiba stumbled upon Kashima, who was accompanied by two high-ranking syndicate members, Onigahara and Takamido.
Shishiba bluntly asked Kashima if Slur was around, stating his intent to eliminate him. Kashima claimed ignorance. Regardless, Shishiba didn’t care if Slur was present or not. In his eyes, Kashima’s illegal weapon manufacturing and hostage-taking violated JAA regulations, giving him more than enough reason to execute him.
In a flash, Onigahara and Takamido surrounded Shishiba. Osaragi instantly launched her attack, wielding a four-pronged rope weapon with scythes at the tips. The ropes lashed out, impaling Onigahara through the chest and back. With one lethal, sweeping motion of her buzzsaw, Osaragi decapitated both Onigahara and Takamido simultaneously. They were dead in seconds.
Tears streamed from behind Kashima’s deer mask. Voice trembling with sorrow, he asked Shishiba and Osaragi, “What do human lives mean to you?” He insisted that the people they slaughtered so carelessly had families and friends they were now forced to leave behind.
Consumed by rage, Kashima vowed to kill the two Order members standing before him. He pulled a stitched thread on his left wrist, and instantly, nine blades sprang from his hand.
Kashima declared that if Shishiba and Osaragi couldn’t comprehend the value of a life, they didn’t deserve to be assassins. The pair responded coldly, telling Kashima not to act holier-than-thou, as the people they killed had murdered many others as well.
Just as Shishiba prepared to insult Slur, remarking, “No wonder your boss isn’t right in the head,” Kashima struck. In a blur, his nine blades slashed across Shishiba’s chest. Kashima proclaimed that his actions were aligned with Slur’s will, rendering his killings just and authorized.
Unbeknownst to him, Shishiba had already materialized right behind him. With one blindingly fast strike, Shishiba slammed his hammer into Kashima’s head, violently twisting his neck before his body crumpled to the floor. Confirming his suspicion that Kashima was indeed linked to Slur, Shishiba turned away. Without another word, he and Osaragi walked off, leaving the incapacitated Kashima behind.
8. Shishiba and Sakamoto Reunite
Osaragi asked if Shishiba was alright after taking the slash. Shishiba brushed it off, explaining he was merely observing the situation—like letting the first pitch go by in baseball. Meanwhile, Kashima forced himself back up behind them. Suddenly, Sakamoto fell from the ceiling, crashing directly onto Kashima and pinning him to the floor.
Shishiba noted that Sakamoto looked healthy. Having not seen his former partner in a long time, Sakamoto asked how the rest of the Order was doing. Shishiba replied they were the same as always, then introduced Osaragi, the newest member. In her mind, Osaragi found Sakamoto adorable, likening him to a teddy bear.
Kashima stood back up and identified Sakamoto as the man who had injured Slur. Shishiba was visibly surprised to learn Sakamoto knew Slur. Fueled by sheer devotion, Kashima swore to obliterate Sakamoto and present him to Slur.
Biting down on his right hand, Kashima tore away the skin like a glove to reveal an integrated firearm. Another gun barrel emerged from inside his mouth—he was a cyborg.
Sakamoto nimbly dodged Kashima’s flurry of nine blades, the gunfire from his arm, a barrage of kicks, and the laser blasts firing from his mouth. Amidst the chaos, Shishiba casually told Sakamoto that he and Osaragi had other business to attend to, leaving the fight in his hands.
Sakamoto agreed, asking Shishiba to send his regards to the rest of the Order. Suddenly, Kashima reappeared behind Sakamoto, delivering a brutal kick to his back that sent him crashing into a wall.
Elsewhere, Osaragi and Shishiba jogged toward their objective. Osaragi asked if it was really okay to leave Sakamoto alone. Shishiba reminded her that their target was Slur, not Kashima. Still worried, Osaragi noted that Sakamoto didn’t look particularly strong and would probably die.
Shishiba acknowledged that Kashima was tougher than expected and that the fight would be a challenge for Sakamoto. However, he reassured Osaragi that he had known Sakamoto for years. To him, the idea of Sakamoto losing—let alone dying—was completely unimaginable.
9. Seba vs. Shin
As Shin sprinted toward the cell where Shaotang was held, he sensed Seba blocking his path. Seba suddenly slashed at him with a knife, but Shin barely managed to dodge, despite Seba being completely invisible.
Seba revealed himself, remarking that he’d score a nice bonus if he delivered Shin to his boss. Shin replied smoothly, stating he had no intention of padding Seba’s bank account. Seba casually admitted his goal was to save up two billion yen before retiring.
Without warning, Seba vanished again, landing a heavy kick that sent Shin skidding backward. Even though Shin could track Seba’s presence by reading his mind, he couldn’t see the direction of the attacks, making his awareness virtually useless. Seba followed up with a crushing punch, knocking Shin back once more.
Despite claiming he hated overtime and wanted to clock out on time, Seba taunted Shin not to send him home too quickly because the fight felt far too easy. Still, Seba admitted that fighting an esper was annoying; Shin could anticipate and dodge the knife strikes aimed at his vitals. On the flip side, Shin admitted that fighting an invisible man was just as difficult.
10. Mashimo Successfully Shoots Seba
With his shift officially over, Seba wanted to end the fight quickly. Shin noticed a parrot’s shadow sweep across the room and sensed someone’s presence, momentarily dropping his guard. In that split second, Seba’s knife buried itself into his body. As he started to collapse, Shin wiped the blood from his wound and deliberately smeared it across Seba’s still-invisible form.
Falling face-first to the floor, Shin muttered, “With this, you won’t miss, right?” Seba was baffled by the remark—especially when he saw the smirk on Shin’s face. He realized he had missed something crucial.
Suddenly, three bullets tore through Seba’s invisible body, forcing him to reveal himself in agony. Mashimo had successfully sniped him, using the smeared blood as a perfect target.
Standing outside with Piisuke perched on his shoulder, Mashimo casually told his bird that there was an invisible man in that place. He added with a chuckle that the world truly was full of unique people.
