In the shinobi world, every mission is a high-stakes battle fraught with risk. The dangers they face don’t just threaten their lives; they often result in fatal injuries or the loss of limbs.

Throughout the Naruto anime, several characters have endured tragic moments in combat that cost them a body part—most notably, their arms.

1. Jiraiya

Jiraiya lost his left arm during his fateful battle against Pain.

In the fight, Jiraiya teamed up with the Two Great Toad Sages to trap three of Pain’s bodies in a powerful genjutsu. The plan worked, leaving the three bodies paralyzed and defenseless. As his former student, Pain had never expected Jiraiya to possess such high-level genjutsu capabilities.

Jiraiya used the moment to remind Pain of an old lesson: never drop your guard against an opponent. Without hesitation, Jiraiya drove his swords through the three trapped bodies, seemingly killing them.

Believing he had won, Jiraiya walked away with confidence, leaving the three corpses behind. He even gave the exhausted Toad Sages permission to return home and rest after singing their grueling genjutsu melody.

Suddenly, another of Pain’s bodies emerged from behind him. Coldly, Pain threw Jiraiya’s own lesson back at him: “Never drop your guard against an opponent.”

Pain unleashed a devastating strike, sending Jiraiya flying backward through a solid concrete wall. The sheer force of the impact severed Jiraiya’s left arm completely.

2. Obito Uchiha

This tragedy unfolded when Obito and Kakashi infiltrated an enemy stronghold—a stone dome—to rescue Rin, who had been taken hostage by Iwagakure shinobi.

But before he could even finish the hand seals, Itachi swiftly drew a kunai and severed Orochimaru’s left arm. Coldly, Itachi informed him that any jutsu he tried to use would be utterly useless against his eyes.

7. Ao

During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Ao worked alongside Inoichi at the Allied Shinobi Forces Headquarters to analyze battlefield intelligence and relay Shikaku’s strategies. Using Inoichi’s telepathy, they successfully broadcast these tactics to every division fighting the Akatsuki across the warzone.
