1. The Thread
Tanjiro realized the secret behind his victory over Sabito. During their clash, he tapped into a unique ability—he could smell and visualize a taut thread extending from the tip of his katana. This thread stretched directly toward a gap in his opponent’s defenses, marking their weak point. By tracing the thread’s path, Tanjiro could swing his blade and strike that vulnerability with absolute precision.
Urokodaki approached the boy, who had just cleft the massive boulder in two. The old master confessed he had never truly wanted to send Tanjiro to the Final Selection. He couldn’t bear to see another of his students die and genuinely believed Tanjiro would never manage to split the stone.
Yet, gently stroking Tanjiro’s hair, Urokodaki praised him as an extraordinary child. Overwhelmed, Tanjiro burst into tears. Urokodaki pulled him into a tight embrace and, with desperate hope, begged the boy to return alive.
2. Food
That night at Urokodaki’s cabin, a warm atmosphere filled the air as the old man grilled fish and prepared soup to celebrate the end of Tanjiro’s training. Watching the boy eagerly devour the meal, Urokodaki thought to himself that the trials ahead would be far more agonizing than anything Tanjiro had faced so far. Harsh, unforgiving days awaited him.
Tanjiro began to trim his overgrown hair. Sitting back-to-back with him, Urokodaki asked, “Is the hot pot good?” Tanjiro answered enthusiastically, “Yes! It’s been so long since I’ve eaten this much.”
Hearing this, Urokodaki smiled. “People with hearty appetites like you draw strength from the food they eat, allowing their bodies to grow larger and stronger,” he explained. “It is the exact same for Demons. Their power comes from the number of humans they consume. The more they eat, the stronger they become—their physical forms alter, and they can even manifest unique powers.”
Urokodaki then opened a cabinet and retrieved a fox mask. “As your sense of smell sharpens, you will eventually be able to tell exactly how many humans a Demon has eaten just from its scent,” he said. Handing the mask to Tanjiro, he called it a “warding mask,” explaining it was a charm forged to protect the boy from evil during the Final Selection.
3. Tanjiro Departs
When morning broke, Tanjiro dressed and prepared for his journey. Before leaving, he gazed at Nezuko. She remained sound asleep on her futon, her condition completely unchanged for nearly two years. Taking her hand, he silently promised to return safely from the exam.
Out in the courtyard, Urokodaki watched Tanjiro, who now wore the fox mask tied to the side of his head, ready to depart. The old master told him not to worry about Nezuko, promising to keep her safe. Tanjiro nodded in deep gratitude.
Waving goodbye, Tanjiro broke into a run, his spirit burning bright. A moment later, he glanced over his shoulder and called back, “Please give my regards to Sabito and Makomo.” Urokodaki froze, utterly shocked to hear the boy speak the names of his two deceased students.
4. Kanata & Kiriya
Tanjiro arrived at the Final Selection site that night, completely mesmerized by the sea of wisteria blooming brilliantly out of season. Climbing the stairs to the shrine, he found a crowd of other candidates hoping to become Demon Slayers, including Zenitsu and Kanao.
Two twin children, Kanata and Kiriya, stepped forward to welcome the candidates. With eerie politeness, they thanked everyone for attending. Kanata explained that Mount Fujikasane served as a prison for Demons captured alive by Demon Slayers, noting that the creatures were entirely incapable of leaving the mountain.
Kiriya continued, explaining that the wisteria, which Demons despised, bloomed year-round from the mountain’s base to its midway slope. Kanata added that the summit area, devoid of wisteria, was where the Demons were trapped and roaming free.
Finally, Kiriya detailed the sole condition for passing the exam: the candidates had to survive in the Demon-infested zone for seven days. With their explanation concluded, the twins bowed and took their leave.
5. Tanjiro Eradicates Demons
As the exam began, Tanjiro solidified his resolve to survive the week. He immediately sprinted east—the direction the sun would hit first—knowing he could rest safely once dawn broke and forced the Demons into hiding.
Mid-stride, Tanjiro caught the foul stench of a Demon. He tightly gripped his katana, bracing for a fight. Without warning, a Demon dropped from the canopy above, but Tanjiro swiftly dodged it. A second Demon lunged from behind, which he effortlessly parried.
The two Demons immediately began to bicker, fighting over who claimed Tanjiro as their prey. They eventually agreed that whoever devoured him first would be the winner. Both launched a synchronized assault, but Tanjiro masterfully deflected their strikes one after another. Despite his skill, the second Demon managed to land a heavy kick, sending Tanjiro stumbling backward.
Seeing them prep for another joint attack, Tanjiro adjusted his breathing, initiating Water Breathing. Instantly, he smelled the opening and visualized the taut threads stretching from his blade to the weak points of both Demons. Following the threads’ trajectory, he unleashed the Fourth Form: Striking Tide. The fluid, singular slash decapitated and scorched both Demons simultaneously.
Tanjiro stood in awe of his own newly forged strength, profoundly grateful that his grueling training had paid off. He also realized that thanks to Urokodaki’s blade, the Demons were turning to ash, leaving not a single bone behind.
He remembered Urokodaki’s lesson: a Demon’s ultimate weak point was its neck, but ordinary steel could never kill them. Demon Slayers wielded swords forged from a special ore capable of eradicating the monsters entirely. To ensure he was ready for the Final Selection, Urokodaki had gifted him one of these Nichirin swords.
6. The Giant Demon
After praying for the souls of the two defeated Demons, Tanjiro suddenly caught a putrid, overwhelming stench. He realized it belonged to a massive, bloated Demon covered in a grotesque tangle of arms, which was actively chasing a boy named Mamat.
Tanjiro trembled at the sight of the monstrosity, his fear spiking when he witnessed it devour another boy named Ujang right before his eyes. Upon consuming its victim, the giant Demon visibly surged with fresh power. It violently extended a lengthened arm and snatched Mamat by the leg as the boy desperately tried to flee.
Despite his shaking frame, Tanjiro steeled his resolve. Reminding himself that he was no longer weak, he swore to save Mamat. Bolstered by courage, he leaped into the air, inhaled using Water Breathing, and unleashed the Second Form: Water Wheel. The spinning vertical slash severed the Demon’s massive arm, freeing Mamat from its deadly grip.
Glaring at Tanjiro, the giant Demon noticed the fox mask tied to his head. It sneered, “Oh, another sweet little fox has come to me.” It then asked, “What year of the Meiji era is it now?”
Confused, Tanjiro replied, “It’s the Taisho era.”
Hearing this, the giant Demon flew into a violent rage. It began frantically clawing at its own flesh, completely unhinged by the realization of how long it had been trapped on the mountain. Seething with fury, it cursed, “Damn you, Urokodaki!”
Bewildered, Tanjiro asked how the creature knew his master. The Demon revealed that Urokodaki was the very swordsman who had captured and imprisoned it on Mount Fujikasane forty-seven years ago—during the Keio era of the Edo period, back when Urokodaki was still an active Demon Slayer.
7. The Fourteenth Target
Mamat cried out that this was impossible; to his knowledge, the Demons trapped here had only ever eaten two or three humans at most. But the giant Demon insisted it wasn’t lying. Over its long imprisonment on the mountain, it had devoured fifty humans.
Chuckling maliciously, the Demon informed Tanjiro that thirteen of those victims had been Urokodaki’s students—and Tanjiro was about to be the fourteenth. It swore to eat every last one of the old man’s disciples. It fondly reminisced about Sabito, the strongest of the lot, and Makomo, who was small but incredibly agile. Tanjiro froze in horror, finally realizing that the two children who had trained him were already dead.
In the spirit realm, Makomo sat atop a boulder and asked Sabito, “Can Tanjiro beat this Demon?” Sabito replied with uncertainty, “I don’t know. You know as well as I do, Makomo… hard work alone isn’t always enough to defeat it.”
The giant Demon pointed a grotesque finger at Tanjiro’s fox mask. It claimed it could recognize every mask Urokodaki carved because they all matched the texture of his own tengu mask.
“Did Urokodaki call it a warding mask?” the Demon taunted. “Every single kid who wore one of those ended up in my stomach.” It laughed sadistically. “It’s as if Urokodaki purposefully packed a lunch and sent it straight to my mouth!”
8. Takeo
Tanjiro’s blood boiled as he listened to the Demon laugh about how it slaughtered Sabito and Makomo. Blinded by rage, he charged recklessly forward, hacking away at the flurry of arms the Demon whipped at him. In the spirit realm, Sabito observed Tanjiro’s erratic breathing and muttered that he shouldn’t be letting his emotions cloud his judgment mid-battle.
As Tanjiro leaped up to sever the giant’s face, the Demon launched a devastating hook from his blind spot, slamming squarely into his ribs. The sheer force launched Tanjiro backward, shattering his fox mask as he violently struck a tree. He crumpled to the dirt, unconscious.
As the colossal Demon lumbered toward the incapacitated boy, Mamat seized the distraction to cowardly flee for his life. The Demon smiled a wicked grin, savoring the thought of devouring yet another of Urokodaki’s beloved students. It gleefully wondered what kind of face the old master would make when he realized none of his disciples ever came home.
Just as the massive fist descended to crush Tanjiro, the boy heard his younger brother Takeo’s voice calling out, urgently trying to wake him up. Jolted by the dream, Tanjiro’s eyes snapped open just in time to roll away, narrowly dodging the lethal blow.
9. Tanjiro’s Resolve
Tanjiro broke into a sprint, fiercely slicing through the barrage of elongated arms tracking his every move. But frustration mounted as the severed limbs rapidly regenerated. Smiling mockingly, the Demon advised him to aim for the neck, just like Sabito did. It proudly recounted how Sabito’s blade had snapped against its impenetrable flesh right before it crushed the boy’s skull. Overflowing with arrogance, the Demon was certain Tanjiro would meet the exact same tragic end.
But Tanjiro did not falter. He was absolutely determined to slay the monster and ensure not a single soul would fall victim to it again. Fueled by a blazing spirit, he pressed his advance, expertly shredding the incoming flurry of limbs with his razor-sharp blade.
Suddenly, his nose picked up the distinct scent of the Demon emerging from beneath the soil right where he stood. Recognizing the ambush, Tanjiro launched himself high into the air. A split second later, four colossal arms violently erupted from the ground, snapping at empty space as his evasive leap carried him safely out of reach.
10. Tanjiro Defeats the Giant Demon
In the spirit realm, Makomo nervously asked if Tanjiro would lose to the Demon’s hardened neck. Sabito replied that victory and defeat were both possible, but emphasized one undeniable fact: Tanjiro was the only student to ever successfully split the boulder.
Meanwhile, the giant Demon watched the airborne boy with supreme confidence, convinced Tanjiro had nowhere to run from its long-range attacks. However, Tanjiro gracefully deflected the reaching hands, landed deftly atop the thick arms, and sprinted directly along them toward the monster’s head.
Channeling his Water Breathing, he moved with practiced fluidity, carving through every regenerated limb the Demon threw in his path to stop him.
Closing in on the head, Tanjiro readied his blade for a decisive strike. The Demon scoffed inwardly, utterly convinced the boy’s katana would shatter against its rock-hard neck. It was already preparing to punch Tanjiro’s skull to paste the moment the blade failed, exactly as it had done to Sabito.
But Tanjiro unleashed the First Form. He caught the scent of the opening and visualized the taut thread extending perfectly from his katana to the weak point on the Demon’s neck. Riding the trajectory of that thread, he swung his blade in a flawless “Water Surface Slash,” cleanly decapitating the giant Demon in a single, devastating stroke.
